Hookah smoking after wisdom tooth surgery - the most important facts

When can you enjoy a hookah again after your wisdom teeth extraction?

Are you having wisdom tooth surgery and wondering how long you should do without your beloved hookah after the procedure?  Find all the important answers about hookah after wisdom tooth removal here.

Should I smoke hookah directly after the operation?

It is strongly recommended that you refrain from smoking after wisdom tooth surgery - this also applies to hookahs and vapes. As a result of the operation, you will have one or more wounds in your mouth that are either open or stitched up. Your gums will be damaged and irritated, so you should take extra care. Nicotine, pollutants and smoke irritate the wounds, dry out the mucous membranes and, if worse comes to worse, delay the healing of the wounds.

What can happen if you smoke hookah after your wisdom tooth surgery?

Immediately turning to hookah after wisdom tooth extraction can lead to far more unpleasant and worse consequences than just more pain. Hookah smoking contracts the blood vessels and reduces the supply of oxygen to your cells. This also interferes with the healing process.  If your wounds do not heal properly or heal slowly, smoking can irritate the sites of wisdom tooth surgery and cause painful inflammation. This makes the healing process more difficult and causes swelling, which in turn can lead to further injury.  In the worst case, an inflammation can turn into an abscess. This is not only unpleasant and painful - it can also take a long time to heal. An abscess in the head area can also be dangerous.

When are you allowed to smoke hookah again after wisdom tooth surgery?

It is ideal to refrain from smoking after tooth extraction until all wounds have healed completely. You will no longer be able to put an unwanted and unpleasant crimp in your healing process and you will be on the safe side. The wounds in your mouth heal best and fastest without smoking.  If you can't or don't want to give up hookah during the healing process, then you should at least give it up for two or three days. You will thank yourself later! After this period, you should check your wounds again. If there is no noticeable improvement or the sores have become infected, it is best to prolong your hookah abstinence until your gums have closed all over and your mouth is free of inflammation.

Preventing inflammation after hookah smoking

After you finish smoking, brush your teeth thoroughly and rinse with a mild mouthwash. This will kill bacteria, germs and viruses, which will help improve oral hygiene and speed up healing. Make sure that both the mouthwash and toothpaste are mild, as irritated gums are usually sensitive to harsh products - which is painful and counterproductive.
